Ways to reduce air loss and boost energy savings

If the wind seems to blow through your windows in the winter, it’s time to get serious and reduce air loss. By sealing leaks and adding insulation in key spots, you can boost your energy savings by as much as 20 percent, according to Energy Star.

The energy savings are based on a standard 3 bedroom house with 1,500 square feet of conditioned floor area and 20 percent duct leakage.

Here’s how to approach this important home improvement project. First, take stock of your doors and windows, and any other sources of air leaks. Consider replacing older windows that have single pane glass, inoperable ropes and pulleys, and unappealing designs. Here’s a good overview from the U.S. Depar

Living with style while living with pets will always pose some challenges, but the two needn’t be mutually exclusive.

While designating a place for toys, leashes, food and supplies will go a long way, the stains, odors and damage to possessions that can come with pets are an enduring concern.

However, smart planning of a homes dcor can make it possible to keep a lovely home even in the presence of animals, says Bruce Norman Long, a Princeton interior designer.

Certainly no one wants to spend what is required for a custom interior and have their little loved ones shred it, he says.

Babington Kitchen Garden

It’s been oooh roughly three and half years since myself and my husband have been away without the children. And while we love the little blighters to pieces we thought it was high time we had a break. So we booked ourselves into Babington Houe for the weekend – a rather nice country house hotel near where we live.

While we were there I took some photos of the gorgeous old walled kitchen garden that they have there.

Wall of Rocker Switches

In this post our attention is towards an installation by Valentin Ruhry, an artist living in Vienna and Graz. His art installations and artistic materials often deal with topics from everyday life, but treated in a humorous manner. The one that follows after the jump certainly made me smile.

This is one of those brilliant ideas that makes you wonder why didn’t I think about that myself. Valentin Ruhry took 5.000 of those orange rocker switches you normally see in surge protectors and power strips and installed them onto a blank canvas. You can turn the switches on and off to create your own message. Loads of possibilities here!
