Sewing Tools–the Awl

Most people think of awls as strictly a woodworking tool, but they can be useful in sewing. An awl can be used to press thick fabric down so that it goes smoothly under the presser foot. Place the awl in front of the presser foot and press down on the material as you sew. This is a great trick to use with thick upholstery or drapery fabric.

Use an awl to press down a zipper at the start of sewing, so that the presser foot glides over the initial hump.

Some sewers like awls made for woodworking, but special sewing awls are available. These have either rounded or pointed tips. Many people prefer the rounded tips because they will not snag fabric.

Solar Bottle Bulbs Provide Lighting Without Electricity [Video]

In the mini-documentary below we see how a simple idea that costs next to nothing can make a big difference. The Solar Bottle Bulb was designed by students at MIT and uses only a plastic bottle filled with water to provide natural lighting. The energy-efficient and environmentally friendly idea requires no electricity to power at all.

Currently the Solar Bottle Bulbs are being installed in Sitios Maligaya in the Philippines to brighten up the community. Over 5000 tiny houses were constructed on an deserted railroad in this underprivileged neighborhood. Each of the houses are closely spaced and lack natural lighting making them a hazard and unpleasant to stay in during the day.
